Heavy Trucking on Pond Street?

Though not well publicized, Pond Street in Winchester and Lake Street in Woburn is a no heavy trucking zone. In fact, I know of only one sign (at the corner of Main and Lake Streets in Woburn). But the rule was confirmed by the Winchester Board of Selectmen in response to a question by Bob Cummings at a Selectmen meeting in October(?) 2009.

Yet I often see 18-wheelers and other heavy trucks on Pond Street. I even saw an 18-wheeler with a wide load come down the road the other day. I didn't have my camera with me but plan to post photos of offenders here. If you get a picture of a heavy truck (think big box truck, 18-wheeler, or other really big truck, not contractor's pickups and vans) on Pond Street send it to me and I'll upload the most egregious to this post!

Case for a Crosswalk to Horn Pond

On September 8, 2009, Jon Lang and I raised a "matter from the audience" to propose a crosswalk to Horn Pond before the Winchester Board of Selectmen. We distributed the following presentation:

The Board instructed the Town Manager and Traffic Committee to review the proposal and report back at the next Board of Selectmen meeting. At that meeting, Jon, myself, and about 40 area residents plead the case for the crosswalk and other traffic calming measures. The crosswalk has subsequently been installed. The Board of Selectmen assured those in attendance that they did not consider the traffic problems on Pond Street solved with the crosswalk and that they would continue to study traffic calming measures.
